  • A Model for Smart Factories in the Age of New Normal: Schneider Electric Unveiled Smart Factory in Iksan, South Korea
A Model for Smart Factories in the Age of New Normal: Schneider Electric Unveiled Smart Factory in Iksan, South Korea Innovation Hub and Control Tower at Iksan Smart Factory of Schneider Electric Korea Schneider Electric Korea (Korea branch Country President Kyung Rog Kim), the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation unveiled the ‘Iksan Smart Factory’ located in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, providing an exemplary model for smart factories in the age of new normal. Kyung Rog Kim, President at Schneider Electric Korea, Taiwan & Mongolia, and other executives attended the opening ceremony for the Iksan Smart Factory, celebrating with cake cutting ceremony and sharing words of encouragement. Afterward, they accompanied Chang-Keun Lee, Director of the Iksan factory, to look at the results achieved from the introduction of smart factory solutions. The results included increased energy savings and production efficiency. They looked around the factory and joined the tour of the Innovation Hub, taking the time to give a demonstration on the various smart factory solutions and digital applications installed in the demo booths. The Iksan factory of Schneider Electric Korea has been a conventional labor-intensive production factory that produced one of the power products, EOCR (Electronic Over Current Relay) over the last three decades. It has been newly transformed to the smart factory with the comprehensive end-to-end solutions based on its integrated architecture platform called EcoStruxure™. ‘EcoStruxure for Industry’ is IIoT-enabled, open and interoperable system architecture for plants and machines. The IoT-enabled architecture delivers safety, reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and connectivity for its users. Using the EcoStruxure core leverages a wide range of technologies in IoT. This includes mobility, sensing, cloud, analytics, and cybersecurity. Together they deliver innovation for connected products, Edge Control, and Apps, Analytics & Services. The technologies that have been applied to the Iksan Smart Factory support both energy management and automation. It is also a space that the solutions are implemented for remote control, augmented reality (AR), predictive maintenance, and security solutions, which are all suitable for the domestic production market. In addition to the ‘EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert’, which is an integrated energy monitoring and management system, it is noteworthy that the factory includes a ‘control tower’ based on AVEVA InduSoft System, which uses manufacturing execution system (MES) to show data about human resources, product quality, energy efficiency, production level, and other indices related to factory management. It also includes a remote controlling system and a monitoring system by EcoStruxure Augmented Operator Advisor using a pad. Using the EcoStruxure Augmented Operator Advisor has the advantage of being able to monitor and inspect the operation of various equipment and facilities, without having to manually operate the complicated machines or open up the panel directly. Therefore, predictive maintenance can be done more easily and safely without pausing the machines. Furthermore, it is convenient to view the blueprint of the related mechanical equipment and other technical data on tablet PC or other smart devices. Also, to showcase the latest model that would serve as a model for the Korean smart factory, Schneider Electric built an ‘Innovation Hub’ within the factory. In the control tower within the Hub, the real-time data about work status, human labor hours, product quality, productivity, safety, and production efficiency can be checked through the factory management system. In the various demo booths, visitors can experience devices and operation related to ‘Digital Electric System and Energy Management System Solution’, an electric device monitoring solution for efficient energy management, a ‘Smart Motor Protection and Information Surveillance Solution’ for motor quality management, maintenance, and predictive maintenance, ‘Modicon M262 Logic Controller’ and the ‘Smart Electrical Equipment Surveillance and Predictive Maintenance Solution’ available for experience. Particularly, smartphones and tablet PCs can be used for remote controlling, cybersecurity, and monitoring experiences. Engineers in the field will be present to answer any questions visitors may have. Kyung Rog Kim, President at Schneider Electric Korea, Taiwan & Mongolia, said “The Iksan Smart Factory is exemplary in both energy management and automation. We expect that it will serve as a leading model for the domestic Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the expansion of a Korean model for smart factories.” He added, “We hope you visit the Iksan factory, which brought to life the vision of a ‘smart factory’ that now has become the core of a new normal, realizing a stable factory operation and remote work environment at the same time, to obtain insights on the innovations of production sites.” The Iksan Factory, first established in 1981, applied a smart factory solution based on systematic monitoring and management systems, and it is expected that this will lead to achievements such as △a decrease of product defect rate by 10% or more △a decrease of energy consumption by 5% or more △a decrease of paperwork by 60% or more. In the next three years, it is expected to increase productivity by 100%. Schneider Electric has a total of 11 smart lighthouse factories around the world. It has six smart factories in the Asian region including Korea, which include the Batam Smart Factory in Indonesia, and factories in Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
